Lead generation is the process of systematically collecting the contact details (name, phone, WhatsApp, email) of people who are interested in your product or service and turning them into sales conversations. A "lead" (in everyday Azerbaijani speech, "lid") is a potential customer who has contacted you but has not yet bought. The short answer to how lead generation is done: you prepare a specific offer, bring traffic to it with advertising or content, capture the enquiry through a form, WhatsApp or Direct, record it in the CRM and answer it within minutes. In this article you will see 9 ways to collect customer enquiries, the steps of the funnel and enquiry costs from real projects.

Key takeaways:

  • A lead is a potential customer who has left their contact details; an MQL is a lead that has shown interest, while an SQL is a lead that is ready for sales; CPL is the cost of one lead.
  • The methods that work best in Azerbaijan: Meta lead forms, click-to-WhatsApp ads, Google Search ads, landing pages and SEO content.
  • The funnel has eight steps: offer → traffic → capture → qualification → fast response → CRM → nurturing → sale.
  • Lead quality matters more than lead quantity: qualifying questions, response speed and simple scoring are what secure it.
  • A real example: 1,759 enquiries in 4 months for Sea Breeze Properties, with the cost per enquiry falling from $5.06 to $2.06.

What is a lead? Lead generation, MQL, SQL and CPL in plain language

A lead is a person who contacts you through any channel and leaves their contact details: someone who fills in a form, writes on WhatsApp, asks the price in Direct or gives their number at an event. Lead generation (in Azerbaijani, "lead generasiya" or "lid generasiya") means obtaining these enquiries in a planned way rather than by chance.

Sales teams sort leads by how ready they are:

  • MQL (marketing qualified lead) — has shown interest: has read an article, downloaded the price list, or clicked on an ad and written in, but it is not clear whether they are ready to buy.
  • SQL (sales qualified lead) — their need, budget and timing have been confirmed; they are ready for a conversation with a sales manager.
  • CPL (cost per lead) — ad spend divided by the number of leads. For example, if $300 of spend brought 100 enquiries, CPL is $3.

These three concepts matter because "many leads" does not at all mean "many sales". Out of 100 MQLs you may get 10 SQLs; your reporting and budget plan should be based on this ratio.

What is the difference between B2C and B2B lead generation?

In B2C the decision is fast and emotional, and the lead usually arrives on WhatsApp or in Direct; in B2B the decision is long and collective, and the lead takes shape through a form, email and a meeting. The choice of method starts from this difference.

Criterion B2C (individual customer) B2B (company)
Decision time Minutes to days Weeks to months
Decision-maker One person Several people (manager, finance, user)
Main channel Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Google search Google search, LinkedIn, email, events, referrals
Lead form Name + phone, or a direct message Company, job title, need, budget, timeline
Value of a lead Low; volume is high High; volume is low
Nurturing Short: reminder, discount Long: presentation, cost estimate, sample project, meeting
Measure of success CPL and conversion to sale Number of SQLs, number of meetings, contracts

9 lead generation methods: which works when?

You do not need all nine methods at once; at the first stage choose 2–3 methods and measure the CPL of each one separately. The table shows what each method is suited to.

Method How it works When it fits
1. Meta lead forms (Instant Forms) A person who clicks the ad fills in a ready-made form without leaving Instagram or Facebook There is no website, or it is slow; you need many enquiries quickly; B2C services, education, real estate
2. Click-to-WhatsApp and click-to-Direct ads The ad button opens a conversation directly Customers are used to writing; they ask about price and details; small businesses, salons, clinics, automotive
3. Google Search ads A person who types the query sees the ad, then calls or goes to the page Demand already exists: repairs, legal services, healthcare, B2B equipment, urgent services
4. Landing page + form A separate page for one offer, with a form or a WhatsApp button The offer needs explaining; you need the Pixel and analytics; high-ticket products
5. SEO content Articles and service pages bring free traffic from Google You need a long-term flow; queries are stable; expert services
6. Webinars and events Participants are gathered through a registration form, then a sales conversation follows B2B, education, consulting, high-ticket services
7. Lead magnets Contact details in exchange for a free estimate, a price catalogue, a checklist or a consultation The decision takes a long time; the customer is comparing
8. Referrals and partnerships Existing customers and neighbouring businesses refer customers Trust is decisive: healthcare, education, real estate, B2B
9. Chatbots and AI agents A first reply around the clock, qualifying questions, recording in the CRM Enquiry volume is high; response speed is a problem; multilingual audience

We show step by step how a Meta lead form is set up in Ads Manager in our guide to running Instagram ads, and how to launch a search campaign in our article on running Google ads. You can read how AI agents work with leads in our article on what an AI agent is.

How is lead generation done? The funnel step by step

Lead generation is a funnel of eight consecutive steps, and the weakest link in the chain determines the whole result: a good ad with a late reply means the budget is lost. The steps below are explained through a hypothetical example: an English course for children in Baku.

  1. Offer. Choose one specific offer: "Free level test and trial lesson". The offer is repeated in the same words in the ad headline, on the page and in the first message.
  2. Traffic. In Ads Manager, launch a campaign with the "Leads" or "Engagement → Messaging" objective and limit the audience to Baku, ages 27–45 and parenting interests; at the same time, set up a search ad on Google for the query "English course for kids Baku".
  3. Capture. Keep only three fields in the Meta lead form: the parent's name, phone number and the child's age. On the landing page, the form and the WhatsApp button should be visible on the same screen. We explain how to build the page in our landing page guide.
  4. Qualification. 2–3 questions in the form or in the first message: the child's age, current level and which days suit. These questions separate an SQL from an MQL.
  5. Fast response. An automatic confirmation message as soon as the enquiry arrives, then a call from the manager; the target is within the first hour. A chatbot handles enquiries that come in outside working hours.
  6. CRM. Every lead goes into the CRM with a source (Meta form, WhatsApp, Google), a status and a person responsible. You can start with Excel, but once the number of enquiries grows a CRM is a must; we show how to set one up in our article on CRM automation.
  7. Nurturing. For those who do not come to the trial lesson: a reminder after 2 days, the group timetable after 1 week and an announcement of a new group after 1 month, by WhatsApp or email.
  8. Sale and analysis. When an enrolment happens, the status in the CRM is set to "sold"; at the end of the month, CPL and the conversion rate to sale are compared for each source.

How do you improve lead quality?

Three things determine lead quality: the right qualifying questions, response speed and a simple scoring system. Without them, managers spend their time on "just asking" enquiries while real buyers wait.

Qualifying questions

2–3 questions in the form or in the first message are enough: what is needed, by when, and what the budget or format is. With too many questions the number of enquiries falls; with too few, quality falls. Find the balance by testing. In a Meta form, the "Higher intent" mode adds an extra confirmation step and reduces accidental enquiries.

Response speed

A lead stays "hot" only for a short time: a customer who writes has usually written to several places on the same day. Make response time a KPI (for example, 15 minutes during working hours), and set up an automatic reply and a chatbot for outside working hours. Each manager's response time should be visible in the CRM.

Lead scoring

A simple points system is enough: the need is clear (+2), the timeline is within a month (+2), the budget fits (+2), the phone number is valid (+1), no reply (−2). A score of 5 or above: the manager calls immediately; 2–4: the lead goes into the nurturing sequence; 1 or below: it goes to the archive. This system allocates time properly even in a small team.

How do you track leads? UTM, Pixel and the CRM source

To know which channel brings sales you need three layers of tracking: UTM tags in links, Meta Pixel and the Conversions API on the website, and a "source" field in the CRM. When one of them is missing, the budget is allocated by "feel".

  • UTM parameters. Add utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to every ad, post and bio link; GA4 then shows which campaign produced the form submissions.
  • Meta Pixel and the Conversions API. The Pixel sends the conversion to Meta from the browser and the Conversions API sends it from the server; with both in place, ads optimise more precisely for the "enquiry" goal. The Pixel is created in Events Manager and added to the website; a form submission is recorded as a "Lead" event.
  • Google Ads conversions. Set up call and form conversions in your Google Ads account so that keywords are optimised for leads.
  • A source field in the CRM. Enquiries that arrive on WhatsApp carry no UTM; so either the manager selects the source manually for each lead, or the pre-filled first message that the ad opens ("I'm writing from your Instagram ad") shows the source automatically.
  • Monthly report. Source → number of leads → number of SQLs → sales → revenue. Only this chain tells you which channel is really working.

How much does a lead cost? Real examples

The cost of a lead depends on the sector, the offer and the creative; figures described as the "market average" are usually made up. So, for reference, we give Advertol's published project results.

  • Sea Breeze Properties — real estate, Meta ads: 1,759 enquiries in 4 months; the cost per enquiry fell from $5.06 in May to $2.06 in July; the 4-month average was $2.80. This is an example of how creative and audience optimisation brings CPL down month by month.
  • Group Motors — automotive: 3,000 enquiries in one month. In a high-volume B2C sector, this is the volume you get when the right offer and a lead form work together.
  • TATS — 600 enquiries from 3 videos, with zero ad spend. When the content itself creates sales demand, lead generation is possible even without an ad budget.

These figures do not transfer automatically to your sector, but two conclusions can be drawn: CPL falls not in the first week but through month-by-month optimisation, and content is sometimes a stronger source of leads than advertising. You can see what the lead generation service covers on the digital marketing page.

The most common mistakes in lead generation

Most mistakes happen not in the advertising but in the steps that come after it. The list below shows the most frequent problems and their fixes.

  • A generic offer. "Contact us" gives no reason to do so. Fix: a specific benefit, a specific timeframe, a specific next step.
  • A long form. A form with 7–8 fields loses the enquiry. Fix: 3 fields, and the rest in conversation.
  • A late reply. The biggest loss of budget. Fix: response time is a KPI, and a chatbot gives the first reply.
  • Calls without qualification. The manager spends the same amount of time on every enquiry. Fix: 2–3 questions and simple scoring.
  • Working without a CRM. Leads are scattered across Direct, WhatsApp and a notebook. Fix: all channels are gathered in one panel, and every lead has a status.
  • A budget without measurement. Nobody knows which channel brings sales. Fix: UTM, the Pixel, the CRM source and a monthly report by source.
  • No nurturing. A customer who says "not now" is forgotten. Fix: a 3-step reminder sequence.
  • A hasty decision. The campaign is stopped after 3 days because "it isn't working". Fix: a 7–14-day test window, then a change of creative.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a lead and a customer?

A lead is a potential customer who has left their contact details or written to you; a customer is someone who has already paid. Some leads never buy, which is why a report should show the conversion rate to sale alongside the number of leads. Marketing's goal is to bring in leads; the goal of sales is to turn them into customers.

Is a website essential for lead generation?

No. Meta lead forms and click-to-WhatsApp ads work without a website, and many businesses in Azerbaijan start in exactly this way. A website or a landing page becomes necessary when the offer needs explaining, when you run Google ads or when you want precise analytics with the Pixel. A simple landing page is often enough as a first step.

A Meta lead form or a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

A lead form brings more enquiries at a lower cost, but some of them do not answer the call; a WhatsApp ad brings fewer but "livelier" enquiries, because the customer starts the conversation themselves. In practice the right approach is to test the two in parallel and choose by conversion to sale. If you are short of manager time, a form + chatbot combination is easier to manage.

How quickly should you respond to leads?

The quicker, the better: within minutes during working hours, and outside working hours an immediate automatic reply plus a call in the first hour of the morning. Customers write to several places at once, and whoever replies first gains the advantage. Measure response time in the CRM and include it in the team's KPIs.

How much does a lead generation service cost?

The service fee depends on the scope of work: preparing the offer, creatives, ad management, a landing page and CRM set-up are separate pieces of work. The ad budget is always separate from the service fee and is paid directly to Meta or Google. Advertol has no published price list: a proposal is prepared individually after a free strategy call.

What is the best source of leads for a B2B company?

In B2B the strongest sources are usually Google search ads and SEO content (companies with a need do the searching), LinkedIn, email campaigns and referrals. Instagram is useful for building trust in B2B, but it is weak as a direct source of leads. Because of the long decision cycle, a CRM and a nurturing sequence are an absolute requirement in B2B.

Conclusion

Lead generation is not an ad but a chain: a specific offer, 2–3 well-chosen channels, a short form, qualifying questions, a reply within minutes, a CRM and nurturing. When every link in this chain is measured, the cost per enquiry falls month by month, as in the Sea Breeze Properties example. When choosing channels, remember the difference between B2C and B2B; in tracking, remember UTM, the Pixel and the CRM source. In 2026 a large share of enquiries arrive on WhatsApp and in Direct, so response speed matters as much as the ad budget.
