What is SEO? SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the combined technical, content and authority work done so that a website appears higher in the free results of search engines such as Google. The goal is not simply "page one" — it is to bring the person who is searching for your service right now to your site and turn them into a customer. Unlike advertising, SEO involves no payment per click, but results take time and consistent work.
Key takeaways:
- SEO rests on three pillars: technical SEO, on-page content and off-page authority — links and brand mentions.
- Google works in three steps: it crawls the page, adds it to the index, and ranks the results that best match the query. The problem can sit at any of these steps.
- SEO in Azerbaijan is multilingual: people search in Azerbaijani (often without the letters ə, ş, ç), in Russian and in English — your keyword plan has to cover all three.
- For a local business in Baku, the fastest wins are Google Business Profile, reviews and identical name-address-phone details everywhere.
- SEO is an investment measured in months; measure results with Search Console and GA4, and do not believe promises of a guaranteed "No. 1 spot".
What is SEO and how does Google rank websites?
SEO is the job of making a website the best answer to a query in the eyes of both the search engine and the human being. Google's aim is to show the user the most useful result; an SEO service is, in essence, about proving that your website is that result. The process has three stages.
1. Crawling
A program called Googlebot finds and reads pages by moving from link to link. If no link leads to a page, if robots.txt blocks it or if the site responds too slowly, Google may never see that page.
2. Indexing
The page that has been read is analysed and added to Google's database — the index. Duplicate pages, pages with very thin content and pages marked noindex do not make it into the index. A page that is not in the index cannot appear for any query.
3. Ranking
When a user types a query, Google ranks the pages in its index according to numerous signals such as relevance, quality, trustworthiness, ease of use and the user's location. The exact formula is not disclosed, but the principles are described in detail in the Google Search Central documentation.
What does search engine optimisation consist of?
Search engine optimisation consists of three pillars, and when one is weak the other two do not fully work: without a technical base content does not get indexed, without content links have nowhere to lead, and without authority it is hard to climb for competitive keywords.
| Pillar | The question it answers | Specific tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Can Google crawl and index the site easily? | Speed and Core Web Vitals, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, sitemap.xml, robots.txt, canonical, hreflang, cleaning up 404s and redirects |
| On-page (content) SEO | Is the page the best answer to the query? | Keyword research, title and meta description, H1–H3 structure, useful copy, internal links, alt text, schema markup |
| Off-page SEO | Do others trust this website? | Links from quality websites, brand mentions in the media and directories, Google Business Profile, reviews |
The right order: a technical audit first, then keywords and content, with authority being built in parallel. If you are commissioning a new website, building the technical foundation into the project from the start cuts later costs considerably — we show this in the checklist in stages of website development.
How do you do keyword research for the Azerbaijani market?
The defining feature of keyword research in Azerbaijan is multilingualism: people search for the same service in Azerbaijani, Russian and English — and, on top of that, often without diacritics. For example, there are four different audiences looking for a dental clinic in Baku by typing "diş həkimi", "dis hekimi baki", "стоматология баку" and "dentist baku".
The practical sequence looks like this:
- Write a seed list. Collect in one spreadsheet the questions customers ask you on the phone and on WhatsApp, your service names, and modifiers such as "price", "Baku", "order", "how to".
- Gather variants from Google itself. Look at autocomplete in the search bar, the "People also ask" block in the results and the related searches at the bottom of the page. Repeat in all three languages.
- Check the volume. In your Google Ads account, go to Tools → Keyword Planner, set the location to "Azerbaijan" and compare the estimated volume of the keywords. In a small market the numbers are low — even a "10–100" range can be a valuable commercial query.
- Look at existing queries. If your site is already live, the Performance → Search results → Queries report in Search Console shows which words — and which spellings — people use to find you.
- Group by intent. "What is", "how to" — informational intent (a blog post); "price", "order", "Baku" — commercial intent (a service page). Assign one page to each group.
- Separate the languages. Prepare separate language versions (
/ru/,/en/) for Russian and English queries. Mixing three languages on one page does not produce good results in any of them.
The rule on diacritics: always write the text in correct Azerbaijani (with ə, ı, ş, ç, ö, ü, ğ). Google usually connects spellings with and without diacritics; stuffing misspellings such as "sayt hazirlanmasi" into the copy, on the other hand, makes the site look low-quality to both the reader and Google.
On-page SEO: a page-level checklist
On-page SEO makes sure every page gives a clear answer to one main query. Check the table below for every important page.
| Element | What it should look like |
|---|---|
| Title | Unique, around 50–60 characters, main keyword at the front; different on every page |
| Meta description | 140–160 characters, a concrete benefit and a call to action; it does not affect ranking directly, but it does affect clicks |
| H1 | One per page, naming the topic precisely |
| H2–H3 | Phrased as the questions people search for; each section opens with a short direct answer |
| URL | Short, in Latin characters, hyphenated, for example: yoursite.az/services/dental-implants |
| Internal links | Links to every new page from at least 2–3 relevant pages, with descriptive anchor text |
| Images | Compressed (WebP), meaningful file name, descriptive alt text |
| Schema markup | Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList — depending on page type |
The most common mistakes: the same title on every page, listing all services on a single page (each service needs its own page), putting text inside an image, and spending time on the "keywords" meta tag — Google ignores it.
Technical SEO: what should you check so your site shows up on Google?
The task of technical SEO is to remove the obstacles that stop your site showing up on Google: the page has to be found, it has to load fast, and the correct version has to be indexed. The checklist:
- Speed and Core Web Vitals. Test your key pages in PageSpeed Insights. The thresholds Google considers "good": LCP up to 2.5 seconds, INP up to 200 milliseconds, CLS up to 0.1. What helps most: compressing images, removing unnecessary scripts and plugins, quality hosting.
- Mobile-friendliness. Google evaluates a site primarily by its mobile version. The content on mobile should be the same as on desktop.
- HTTPS. The SSL certificate is active, and the
httpandwwwvariants are 301-redirected to one main address. - sitemap.xml. It contains only pages that should be indexed, and it has been submitted in the Sitemaps section of Search Console.
- robots.txt. Admin and technical sections are closed, the main content is open. Forgetting a
Disallow: /line left over from the staging phase after the site goes live is a classic mistake. - Canonical. URLs with filter, sorting and UTM parameters are pointed to the main page with a canonical tag.
- Hreflang. On AZ/RU/EN sites every language version is linked to the others with reciprocal
hreflang(az, ru, en and x-default); each language has its own URL. Do not redirect automatically by IP. - Index report. Once a month, review the "Not indexed" reasons in the Indexing → Pages report in Search Console; check a specific page with URL Inspection.
Speed often depends on the choice of technology. For example, the hand-coded website for Aston Martin in Advertol's portfolio is fast because it carries no surplus template code — which shows that technical SEO begins at the design stage.
Local SEO for Baku: how do you appear on Google Maps?
For a business with a physical address, local SEO is the direction that delivers the fastest results, because for "near me" and "Baku" queries Google shows the map block first. The main steps:
- Create and verify a Google Business Profile. Add the right primary category, opening hours, phone, website, services and real photos.
- Keep NAP consistent. Name, address and phone must be identical, letter for letter, on your website, in your Google profile, on Instagram and in local directories.
- Collect reviews. Send a satisfied customer the review link via WhatsApp; write a calm, specific reply to every review, especially the negative ones. Buying reviews or having employees write them is both against the rules and usually noticeable.
- Give local signals on the website. Address, map, opening hours and LocalBusiness schema on the contact page; if you have several branches, a separate page for each.
- Keep the profile alive. New photos, updates and answers to questions show that the profile is active.
Content strategy and links: how is authority built?
Google favours not a single good page but a website that covers a topic in depth; this is called topical authority. The other half of authority is other websites referring to you.
Topic clusters
For every core service, plan one "pillar" page (for example, "website development") and 5–10 blog posts that support it: prices, types, stages, mistakes, comparisons. Tie them all together with internal links. Base the posts on real experience — your own figures, photos, case studies. Show the author and the date of the last update, and refresh outdated posts once a year.
Earning links ethically in Azerbaijan
- Getting added to the "partners" section on the websites of partners, suppliers and dealers.
- Expert comments, interviews and guest posts in industry media and on business portals.
- Useful material based on your own data — a price overview, a calculator, a checklist; people link to pages like these voluntarily.
- Events, sponsorship, cooperation with universities and associations.
- Fully completed profiles in local business directories and map services.
Stay away from black-hat methods
Purchased link packages, PBN networks, keyword stuffing, hidden text, copy lifted from another site or unedited mass-produced AI text, fake reviews — all of these go against Google's spam policies. The outcome can be a manual action or an algorithmic drop, and recovery takes months. A contractor who offers a "No. 1 spot in a month, guaranteed" is usually relying on precisely these methods.
SEO or Google Ads: which should you choose, and when?
The short answer: if you need results quickly, Google Ads; if you want long-term traffic without paying per click, SEO; and best of all is running the two together.
| Criterion | SEO | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| When results start | Months | As soon as the campaign is approved |
| Payment model | An investment in work and content; the click is free | Payment for every click |
| When the budget stops | Traffic continues for some time | Traffic cuts off immediately |
| Appearance in results | As a regular (organic) result, without an ad label | With a "Sponsored" label, at the top or bottom of the results |
| Best suited to | Services with constant demand, a blog, a long-term brand | A new website, a campaign, a seasonal offer, testing keywords quickly |
The smart approach: use Ads for a month or two to learn which keywords bring real enquiries, then direct your SEO budget at exactly those keywords. We explain how to set up a campaign in how to advertise on Google, and the overall picture of channels in what is digital marketing.
How long does SEO take and how do you measure results?
SEO is measured in months, not weeks: in practice the effect of technical fixes is felt within a few weeks, while the effect of content and authority is usually felt after 3–6 months; for competitive keywords it takes longer. The pace depends on the site's age, the competition, the volume of content and the technical condition, so it is impossible to promise an exact date or position.
Measure results with these metrics:
- Google Search Console: impressions, clicks, average position and CTR — by query and by page; the number of indexed pages.
- GA4: the "Organic Search" channel in the Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition report; forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks should be set up as key events.
- Business outcome: the number of enquiries and sales coming from organic traffic. Position is the means; the customer is the goal.
SEO in the age of AI answers
In 2026 part of search happens in tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity: the user gets a ready-made answer rather than a list of links. This does not abolish SEO — AI systems draw their answers mainly from well-indexed, structured and trustworthy pages. What changes is that sections opening with a direct answer, tables, FAQs and precise facts become more important. We cover this direction separately in what is GEO: being visible in AI search.
Frequently asked questions
What does an SEO service include?
A professional SEO service covers a technical audit, keyword research, page optimisation, a content plan, link and local-profile work, plus a monthly report. Alongside positions, the report should show organic traffic and enquiries. Before you sign up for SEO services in Baku, ask in writing which tasks will be carried out each month.
Can I do SEO myself?
The basics, yes: writing titles and meta descriptions, filling in your Google Business Profile, publishing useful blog posts and keeping an eye on Search Console do not require any special programming knowledge. For a technical audit, speed optimisation, hreflang and schema markup, however, you usually need a specialist or a developer.
Why doesn't my website show up on Google?
The most common reasons: the site is new and has not been indexed yet, robots.txt or noindex is blocking pages, the content is very thin, or competition for the chosen keyword is high. Enter the page's address into the URL Inspection tool in Search Console — there you will see whether Google can see it and what is causing the problem.
Can anyone guarantee first place on Google?
No. Ranking is determined by Google's algorithm, and no contractor controls it. Offers that come with a guarantee either refer to keywords nobody searches for or rely on risky black-hat methods.
Can an Instagram page replace a website for SEO?
No. An Instagram profile can show up on Google mainly for your brand name, but for commercial queries of the "service + Baku" type the competition is between websites and Google Business profiles. To win customers from search you need a website or, at the very least, a fully completed Google Business Profile.
When should you start SEO for a new website?
Before the website is built. Structure, URLs, language versions and speed are decided at the design and development stage, and changing them later is expensive. Do the keyword research at the brief stage so that the page map is based on real search demand.
Conclusion
SEO is not a magic button but consistent work: a technically healthy website, content that answers real questions and authority earned over time. In the Azerbaijani market, search in three languages and a strong local factor are added to that. As a first step, connect Search Console, go through the technical checklist and distribute your keywords across pages by intent.
